Around 10% of all marine litter is derived from the fishing industry. Morrisons recognises that its supply chain has a significant part to play in supporting the reduction of marine litter and helping clean up our oceans.
Since 2018 and 2019 respectively, Morrisons has supported Fathoms Free and Odyssey Innovation in the South West of the UK — home to important and productive mixed fisheries that supply Morrisons' fresh fish counters. This support has helped fund volunteer conservation clean-up activity along the South West coastline and is helping provide end-of-life recycling solutions for fishermen through Odyssey Innovation's Net Regeneration Scheme.
Morrisons also recognises the value of the work undertaken by the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) in identifying best practice for the fishing industry, and draws upon their guidance when reviewing prospective sources of fish and seafood.
This partnership is a strong example of how major retailers can take responsibility for the environmental impact of their supply chains — and how Odyssey Innovation's Net Regeneration Scheme provides a practical, scalable solution that works for both the fishing community and the environment.
