Why Sustainability in Bodyboarding Matters
As bodyboarding continues to grow in popularity, with major events like the IBC World Tour and the European Surfing Federation bringing the sport to the global stage, more and more riders are asking the right questions—how can we enjoy the waves without harming the environment?
Surfers, bodyboarders, and water sports enthusiasts often witness the effects of plastic pollution firsthand. According to Surfer Magazine, some of the world’s top surfing destinations are also among the most polluted. With the sea as our playground, we can’t ignore the mounting environmental cost.
The Problem with Polystyrene
Traditional bodyboards—especially low-cost models—are commonly made from expanded polystyrene (EPS). While EPS is lightweight and affordable, it’s notoriously fragile. These boards break easily, and sadly, many are discarded on our beaches or end up in the sea.
A 2018 study by the Marine Conservation Society found an average of 182.6 pieces of plastic or polystyrene for every 100 metres of UK beach. Even worse, EPS is nearly impossible to recycle and takes centuries to decompose. In the meantime, it breaks down into tiny particles that are ingested by marine life—eventually entering the human food chain, with serious health implications (Global Seafood Alliance).
