Odyssey Innovation and Malta Fish Farms Recycle 16,840kg of Aquaculture Waste

A new chapter in marine conservation and circular economy innovation, made in Malta.

In a major stride toward sustainable aquaculture and ocean-friendly innovation, Odyssey Innovation Ltd. has partnered with Malta Fish Farms (MFF) to recycle 16,840kg of end-of-life fishing gear — the equivalent of an entire 40-foot shipping container filled with used ropes.

This landmark initiative is part of a shared mission to tackle marine plastic pollution and champion the circular economy in the Mediterranean region.

Giving Plastic Waste a Second Life

By diverting this waste from landfills and into a sustainable recycling stream, MFF is reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship. For Odyssey Innovation, this project marks another exciting step in expanding its award-winning Net Regeneration Scheme — now being brought to Malta for the first time.

“This kind of innovation is a perfect example of the circular economy in action — transforming waste into tools that help us recover even more waste,” says Robert Thompson, founder of Odyssey Innovation. “We’re proud to be part of a movement that reduces environmental impact, educates and empowers the next generation. This progress is only possible through collaboration. We’re thrilled to work alongside MFF and bring our proven recycling systems to Malta.”

From Ropes to Resources: Meet 'Scuttle the Cuttle'

Among the innovative products created  by Odyssey Innovation -all from recycled marine plastic- is Scuttle the Cuttle — a microplastic collection tool made using repurposed ropes from the fishing industry.

Recently trialled at Golden Bay Beach, 100 local schoolchildren used Scuttle the Cuttle to collect an incredible 13,600 microplastic fragments in just a few hours. The event showcased how environmental education, circular design, and community action can converge to inspire real impact.

Local Solutions for Global Challenges

As Odyssey Innovation continues to grow its operations in the Mediterranean, the goal is clear: create scalable, practical, and locally rooted solutions that address marine litter, reduce environmental impact, and turn waste into a resource.

This successful collaboration with MFF is just the beginning of a broader plan to support Malta’s blue economy and position local industry at the forefront of the global fight against ocean pollution.
